A good question would be if it's the internet connection, or the computer.

If he can open up something simple like text edit, and type in there, then it's either the internet connection or the browser.

If he can't even do stuff in textedit, then it's the whole computer, or something that is affecting the whole computer, like a plugin taking all the memory or CPU time.

For just the browser, I'd make sure he has all the latest plugins. Again, the latest version of Flash is key. And make sure he has all of the Apple software updates.

One other thing to check is if the fan is running and he has it on a surface that is making it hot. A month ago on our MacBook, we watched a season of shows from Netflix. It started stuttering, both video but mostly in the audio, and we even got some errors. Once we made sure that the air holes weren't covered, the audio stuttering went away. Streaming video does require some heavy lifting, so this is one thing to check.

That gives you a few things to have him check. If those don't help, or it's too hard, then a genius appointment would be a good idea.
