A growth and income fund can be a reasonable choice for a Roth IRA, but most have performed in the 10-15% range recently , while index funds and large caps have been 20-30% and technology funds have been 60-90%.

There is a trade-off between risk and returns, and it depends on how close you are to retirement. If you are more than 5 years from retirement, an index fund is a reasonably conservative risk.
