One more thing about the relationship between religion and disease. I've heard it stated that the Jews suffered less from the black death plagues because of their strict dietary laws. If this is true, this would be a case where a faith-based "revelation" also had medical benefits. One could make the same argument with religion-based doctrines concerning abstinence, monogamy, incest, which would reduce incidences of STDs and genetic diseases.
