A lot of people who become unemployed in their 60's are going to file for social security, because waiting when you have no FICA income doesn't make a lot of difference, especially assuming that you keep investing. Most of those statistics about waiting assume that you keep working until you file and spend the money that you collect instead of investing it.

Despite laws against age discrimination, a lot of people have no job and no choice, and a lot of people in their 60's are quitting jobs to take care of elderly parents, as well.
