A pill that reduces obesity as much as bariatric surgery could be a real game-changer.

Bariatric surgery was a temporary stop-gap measure. Unless people changed their relationship with food and exercise, they eventually found a way to "eat around" the surgery. Saw several co-workers have the surgery, loose 150 pounds or more, and then put it back on over a couple years.

An interesting aside, one summer during medical school I worked at a pharmaceutical company in the R&D department helping to write research protocols and compiling/checking data. The researcher I worked under was studying depression and potential new antidepressants. And interesting aside, many of the new tested drugs couldn't outperform the old "gold standard" as far as depression, but many had an interesting "side effect" of weight loss. One was later released as a weight loss drug.

People will opt for the easy solution, so the pill will eventually win out.
