Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine practice that originated thousands of years back. It's founded on the assumption that a disturbance or blockage in the circulation of the body's life energy, or"qi," can lead to health difficulties. It is a complementary medical practice that Involves stimulating certain points on the body, most frequently with a needle penetrating the epidermis to relieve pain or to help treat various health conditions. According to this theory, there are more than 1000 acupuncture points on the body, each lying on an invisible energy station, or "meridian."
A trained acupuncturist inserts these hair-thin needles to specific acupuncture points throughout the body to renew the circulation of qi, balance the body's energy, stimulate healing, and encourage relaxation.
One of the largest studies to date on acupuncture and chronic pain included a meta-analysis of 29 well conducted studies involving nearly 18,000 patients and published in October 2012 at the Archives of Internal Medicine discovered that acupuncture is effective for treating chronic pain and consequently is a reasonable referral option.
Researchers are also conducting research to find out whether acupuncture is effective at treating depression, anxiety and many different cancer and cancer treatment-related symptoms.
