I put together a "shaft detector" a few years ago to show the effect of advisor fees. At 1% of assets, the advisor is going to skin you for about 20% of your net worth over 30 years.

The most highly compensated hours of my engineering career was the time I spent at work reading financial publications and studying about financial planning rather than doing anything extra that may or may not have resulted in a raise or promotion.

The premium you'll earn for doing it yourself is substantial.
