All that remains of the eruption is the harbor (caldera). Santorini can be picturesque, but in-season can be so packed with cruise ship passengers that I try to avoid it.

If you are coming by ship, there are a few ways to "the top" at Thira. There is the ride on donkey up the steps (don't recommend this). There is the walk up the steps filled with donkey poop and dodging strings of tourists on donkeys (I REALLY don't recommend this). There is an aerial tramway which is OK - unless it has an hour long cue in the heat because a large ship is in-port. There is a ferry to a picturesque town down the coast (Oia) and then a bus to Thira.

Coming by plane is probably best.
