Also read about the Target Disk Mode and the Firmware option, I'm sure my iMac is intel-based so it seems like that would not be a viable option also, as you might have guessed, I'm not very techie....most of this is a total mystery to me although I try, and try, and try..... ;)

Firewire target mode works on both intel and pre-intel machines. And I did it on both (an old G4 iBook and an intel iMac, both to an intel iMac) yesterday. How's that for timeliness.

Now, trying to boot an intel machine from a PPC system, or a PPC system from an intel OS, that won't work. But if you have one of the installs that supports both types of processors, you could boot from it. OTOH, firewire target mode is mostly just a way to easily access the HD on a different machine.
