Although the data indicates that the adversary may be unprepared or with faulty equipment is is still always safer to assume the opposite and not to attack an armed criminal.

It is far, far better to calmly defuse the situation, survive and quickly call 911 after the confruntation. On a 911 call, adding "Shots Fired" will get an immediate response by a SWAT Team to the site of the incident.

It is far far better to stick to subjects you have some knowledge of. An armed criminal intent on murder, mayhem, kidnapping or rape is not someone you want to put yourself at the mercy of. And you don't know until you give up do you?

On a 911 call adding "Shots Fired" will get an immediate response, but not by the SWAT team. SWAT teams are called in by responding officers after they determine a need for SWAT.

MORE IMPORTANTLY reporting "shots fired" when there haven't been any shots fired will get you arrested/cited by responding officers once they determine you've lied.

FURTHER your lie will have to be included in the officer's report which will discredit you in any court case stemming from the incident. Some (many? most?) DA's won't prosecute the criminals that victimized you due to not wanting to put an unreliable (lying) witness on the stand.
