I've got this burning question. Can anyone tell me how companies account for the money spent trying to figure out if their competitors' products violate their IP? Does that show up as R&D on the balance sheet under GAAP? Is there flexibility in where you put the expense?

I am probably talking to a wall and don't know it. If so, then my blog here, is now also becoming my things to do list.
