And does anyone know if any of the lower ranked schools have played in a major bowl in, say, the past 10-15 years?

If/when the Big East loses their automatic bid next season, then these teams would qualify:

WVU: '04 Gator, '97 Gator, , '94 Sugar (undefeated regular season), '89 Gator, '88 Fiesta (National Championship Game, undefeated regular season). Go farther back and you will find 4 Peach Bowls when it was a major bowl, a few more Gator's, and another Sugar Bowl.

Syracuse: '99 Orange, '97 Fiesta, '96 Gator, '93 Fiesta, '89 Peach, '88 Sugar. Go farther back and find 2 more Orange, 2 Cotton, and a Sugar.

Louisville: '91 Fiesta

Pittsburgh: 3 Fiestas, 3 Sugars, 3 Gator's and a 1976 National Championship. These go back farther than 10 years, but show tradition.

These teams are but a few of the programs that deserve an opportunity to play for the National Title.

Hypothetically, WVU COULD have won the National Championship this seaseon. Regardless of whether you think they are the best team, they had an opportunity. Had they not squandered their chance by losing to VT, and returned every player next season and went undefeated again, then they don't get a shot at next season's title, even though the team is the same except one year more mature? They don't get a chance because the Big East loses an autobid? That doesn't square up.

The BCS is flawed from top to bottom. This same situation is why Major League Baseball is in the trouble it is in with the collective bargaining agreement. Geographically the BCS shuts out a huge portion of the country from playing in a major bowl game.
