And one more opportunity. We all have jobs, with colleagues all around us. I learned recently that a much higher fraction of my colleagues than I ever imagined are struggling with mortgage payments, credit card debt, and similar troubles. Having a copy of a Dave Ramsey book on a shelf, or something similar, is a great way to invite a conversation without ever pushing anyone. And then it becomes a teachable moment.

I once suggested having a one-hour session on financial planning, but I was told that all these kids who graduated with degrees in engineering and so on already knew this, and that the senior people had degrees in economics and finance, so they knew this, so that just left the support staff. I bet there are other people who need this help, but it isn't getting there.

But I think you're right when you say it isn't part of our culture. But with the incredible price we've paid recently for lack of financial comprehension, perhaps we need to alter the national conversation enough to add financial literacy.

And if all those guys can do batting averages in their head, I bet they could do interest rates as well.
