And the thing is, there have been tons of studies done that show that these mass-production farms are just not necessary.

Who does these studies, some sort of National Ineffeciency Group? Maybe it's the Amish doing these studies, in an effort to regress us back through the industrial age to the agricultural age. Now THAT was a prosperous time, with feudalism and plagues and the middle ages, etc.

Seriously, I can't see the logic behind wanting a whole bunch of small farms instead of one larger one in order to benefit society. You'd free up labor for more profitable ventures as well as increase productivity of the farms due to efficiencies of scale. Small farmers wouldn't like it, but not everyone likes progress.
