And then my direct ancestor is named James, though there is also a Jonathan Jr. And I've only really explored the children of James, not the others in his generation - no telling how many Johns or Jonathans there are still.

Maddening, isn't it? I have one family that kept using the name Morris, and then began using Maurice, Moses, Mary and Mercy. And they weren't all in the same direct line, either. A sibling might also also name his child Moses, with the result that I have overlapping years with three different Morris's in the same generation.

Wait until you hit the custom of naming a baby with a deceased child's name. If a baby named John was born, and died a few years after his birth, the parents would name their next child John. (I once had four attempts to use a name. Disentangling that mess took quite a while).

But when you clear up a mess, and know that you have the right person, there's a real feeling of triumph.

Welcome to the world of genealogy!
