And while we're at it, why do we have "tamper-proof"? The description I read indicates it has to do with inserting two prongs at once, not allowing a single insertion (like a butter knife). So what?

Frankly, it's a PITA. We have a couple of those "tamper-proof" outlets, and it's fiddly just putting in a regular plug. I've actually opened a couple of them up and removed the tamper-proof mechanism. (I'm also the kind of guy who rips "Do not remove" tags off mattresses)
