Another factor is the last of the baby boomers are reaching retirement age. Remember the post war baby boom. Many families had three or four kids. But then came the pill, working women, and small family size.

Pre World War I, the day of the horse population density in rural areas was 30/sq mile. Smaller family size and mechanization can take us to less than 2 per sq mile. In Missouri some rural counties were down to 8 per sq mile in 2010.

Those large families provided lots of local manpower.

Raising the birth rate looks not very promising. Subsidizing child care might help.

We need immigration reform with allowance for more with need ed job skills.
