Another factor to keep in mind is high grain prices. High prices make financing available to cut down the forest, harvest the lumber, and plant soybeans.

The why of high grain prices gets many answers. Part of it is last year's drought in the US which reduced production. Some blame corn based ethanol. Others note that developing economies like China and India are switching from their traditional rice diet to eat more meat.

Chicken takes a lb of grain to produce a lb of meat; pork two lb; beef four lb.

All of this advances the economies and std of living of developing countries, but at some cost to the environment.
