I hope you have been watching or have seen Ken Burns' Civil War. If not, here are some observations.

It is hard to believe the Union won the war. If not for the death of Stonewall Jackson and the fatal error of R.E. Lee to invade the North, we might be two different countries today. Either that or the war would have been much longer. Lee thought he was invincible and considering how poorly the Union performed up to that time, it is no wonder he thought so.

I had no idea that many in the North were against the emancipation proclamation and Lincoln was reviled even in the North during much of the war. There were draft riots; mostly Irish rioters attacked black hospitals, schools, housing in NY City in 1863. One hundred people died.

A professor from Maine with no military experience, J.L. Chamberlain, was a vital part of the Northern win at Gettysburg. Heaven knows the Northern generals with any idea on how to fight were few and far between. Also, 23 year old George A. Custer & his cavalry are able to hold back the Confederate attack from the rear at Gettysburg.

A black Union soldier, Alex Turner, had a daughter in the 1880s who is featured in the film. She is 104 and recites poems and letters from memory. It is amazing.
