Betsy DeVos, who attended private Christian high school and private Christian College, opposes public education and has been fighting for uncontrolled charter schools and vouchers, is Trump's choice for Dept of Education.

IMO the schools she attended don't matter.

But her support for charter schools WITHOUT OVERSIGHT is a major concern as is her support for vouchers particularly since "...Trump has proposed creating a $20 billion federal voucher program for families to use to send their kids to the school of their choice."

She is a billionaire philanthropist and major Republican donor who has almost no political experience, particularly at the national level. (And we know that Trump also has no political experience.)

"The announcement signals that big changes could be on the way for schools and students around the country."

In addition, her husband "...is the former president of Amway, which his father co-founded... Her brother, Erik Prince, founded Blackwater, the controversial security firm."

IMO the schools she attended don't matter.

They do to me. She has had no ivolvement with public schools. She attended religious schools and homeschool and used used private schools for her 4 children--despite living in an excellent pubic school district in a tony suburb of Grand Rapids. She hates the very concept of public schools and, like Trump, thinks all schools should be private. She and Trump are also likely to fight to get the federal govt out of the school loan business, turning students back into the arms of for-profit lenders. But she is chiefly motivated by getting all taxpayers to pay for Christian schooling.

Out of a bunch of (so far) deplorable cabinet choices, she's the very worst. Did I mention that her family is one of the biggest contributors to so-called soft money/dark money for extremely conservative causes?

PS--How did her family acqure their billions? The old-fashioned way--inheritance. Her father started Amway, placing her family at the top of a pyramid scheme.

I don't care what schools she or her children attended; she has the right to make those decisions. But she should NOT be making that decision for everyone else -- and charging taxpayers for it!!!

I believe it was her husband's father who started Amway, not her father. And, yes, it is a pyramid scheme.

Yes, she is an advocate for expanded vouchers so every kid gets one.....good for any school in the district......

She's out to bust the teachers unions and their monopolies who seem to insure that half the kids who graduate from 'high school' can barely read at 7th grade level, and 25% at the 5th grade level.

It's so bad the armed forces have had to dumb down instruction manuals to fifth grade levels.......

So...public schools in many places - FAIL - miserably and it's the 'public system' monopoly - pushed by 70 years of teachers unions and administrations, with a top-down direction from Washington from everything from school lunches to politically correct bullsh*t Common Core rewrite of American history.........and zillions of 'strings' attached to any funding for any purpose.....to insure you dance to the tune of the fiddlers in DC

She's managed to expand school vouches to over 400,000 kids now.....who have a choice.

As apposed to Obama who tried to kill school vouchers to please his teachers unions and their annual tens of millions in campaign donations to the dem party each election cycle.......in exchange for ...killing school vouchers!.......

We have too many bad teachers. Or ineffective ones.

We have too many students disrupting class with no way to discipline most.......

Folks are very happy with 'school choice'. Rather than 'national education'......

Half the Department of Education could be chopped. Maybe more. Save us a bundle. What is it they do, anyway? Other than generate paper, require schools to fill in hundreds of forms a year slicing and dicing student 'populations' by minorities, ethnicity, country of origin......and on and on..

I've seen first hand the waste and abuse...My sister worked ten years of 'education programs' trying to provide database reports on the various 'initiatives' and 'grants' given out. The only thing the people who got access to the database wanted was ways to 'spin' the results to be good no matter whether there was any 'good results' or not.....select the parameters, datasets, sub sets, fudge factors...until they got the result from the 'data' they wanted......not the actual result........ you know the answer - positive outcome but MORE funding required to 'expand' the program and keep providing the 'long term benefit'. More funding! Data in....data mostly ignored......selective use of 'filters', time intervals, subsets, then could 'prove' just about anything.....

alstro:""She has had no ivolvement with public schools. She attended religious schools and homeschool and used used private schools for her 4 children--despite living in an excellent pubic school district in a tony suburb of Grand Rapids."

Yep, and Obama and most of the DC elites send their kids to private schools. What else is new? I'd bet her private schools are better than the public schools and don't need 'safe spaces' for 'snowflakes' and 'time off' after the election for liberal democrat crybabies to cry into their government provided porridge.

Did Obama send his kids to public schools in Chicago? In DC?
Shumer? Pelosi? Chelsea?

alstro:"She hates the very concept of public schools and, like Trump, thinks all schools should be private."

No, she thinks all people should have a choice of public OR private.

So far, more than half the kids in the US have substandard schools taught by monopoly run teachers unions whose main interest is feathering their own pockets, advancing their own pension schemes and days off. With at least 20% incompetent teachers around the country who can't be fired .........

I don't seem to find in the Constitution anywhere - where the Federal government is charged with 'public education'. That is a state function. Or local function.

Other than the half dozen 'military academies' - the US government has no 'universities'. They are all state run or private. And work well.....other than run away tuition - in part caused by federal mandates like millions for new transgender bathrooms......and filling out millions of pages of forms....each year....requiring 100,000 people to shuffle the 'federal paperwork'.

In fact, other than grant money (usually with all sorts of left wing PC 'strings' attached).....the fed makes up mandates and directives (by having fed money sloshed out)......to schools to meet...and endless forms to fill in...for Washington bureaucrats to pore over so they can come up with more forms to fill out....

At least half the 'education' department can do....maybe nearly all of it.

then a good part of the 'Justice department' which does the 'enforcement' for all the mandates of the education department.

" She and Trump are also likely to fight to get the federal govt out of the school loan business, turning students back into the arms of for-profit lenders. But she is chiefly motivated by getting all taxpayers to pay for Christian schooling."

Good...the government has a TRILLION dollars in loans...and the libs are hot to trot to 'forgive' most of them if they can. Taxpayers will be on the hook for tens of thousands EACH to pay write offs for welshing deadbeat students who default rather than pay.

alstro:"Out of a bunch of (so far) deplorable cabinet choices, she's the very worst. Did I mention that her family is one of the biggest contributors to so-called soft money/dark money for extremely conservative causes?"

You mean like school vouchers? Ho ho ......

As if George Soros didn't spend 100 million trying to get Hillary and other dem henchmen elected this past election? For extremely radical left causes!

- ----------

alstro: PS--How did her family acqure(sic) their billions? The old-fashioned way--inheritance. Her father started Amway, placing her family at the top of a pyramid scheme. "

Call it what you want.....they've never been charged with anything....and folks up and down the organization make money.....
Don't they actually sell hundreds of millions of dollars of products a year?

Face it...the Dept of Education is a corrupt organization, bloated, owned by teachers unions, way beyond it's Constitutional authorization (it has none) in areas the feds should not be involved in......

The DeVos family belongs to the deeply conservative Reformed Church in America, and has pushed for years to breach the wall between church and state on education, among other issues.* Betsy, who served as the chairwoman of the Michigan Republican Party in the late nineties and again in the early aughts, spent more than two million dollars of the family’s money on a failed school-vouchers referendum in 2000, which would have allowed Michigan residents to use public funds to pay for tuition at religious schools.

The family then spent thirty-five million dollars, in 2006, on Dick Devas’s unsuccessful campaign to unseat Jennifer Granholm, then the Democratic governor of the state. After that campaign, the DeVos family doubled down on political contributions and support for conservative Christian causes. Members of the family, including Betsy and Dick DeVos, have spent heavily in opposition to same-sex-marriage laws in several states. According to the Michigan L.G.B.T. publication PrideSource.com, Devos and her husband led the successful campaign to pass an anti-gay-marriage ballot referendum in the state in 2004, contributing more than two hundred thousand dollars to the effort. Dick Devos reportedly gave a hundred thousand dollars, in 2008, to an amendment that banned same-sex marriage in Florida. That year, Elsa Prince Broekhuizen, Betsy Devos’s mother, was a major contributor to the effort to pass Proposition 8, which made same-sex marriage illegal in California.

I don't want someone with no experience with public schools making major decisions about public schools. It would be like making someone with no govt experience President(!). Or someone with no international experience UN Ambassador. Or someone opposed to Civil Rights for non-whites, non-Christians, and non-straights Attorney General. IOW a typical deplorable Trump appointment.

It would be something else if she even had a bad experience wiht public schools. But she didn;t. She wants every American kid to attend a private Christian school--with a taxpayer-supported voucher and no oversight.

Perhaps I take this extra personally because my son is a public school teacher. A science teacher who would go unemployed rather than teach religion in his classroom.

Ein Volk! Ein Reich! Ein Fuhrer!

Apologies, of course, to Godwin and his law; but that's what this supposed advocate of freedom sounds like.

What was it they shouted at that "meeting" a few days ago? "Hail victory!", which translates to "Sieg heil!"

The stupidity of this statement, and most of what follows, is palpable.

School choice is a pipe dream. The best schools, just like the worst schools, have only a limited number of seats. Moreover, many (if not most) have restrictive. admission requirements.

Yeah, let's see how far a voucher goes at Dalton, Collegiate, Trinity, orEthical ( Barron Trump probably goes to one of them) where tuition is north of $25k. Yeah, that'll work. Of course, well know that vouchers are just a way of funding mediocre parochial schools (though not the more expensive ones run by the Jesuits).

I've seen first hand the waste and abuse...My sister worked...

Er, not to be too picky, but that's second hand.

Even though the DeVos family is responsible for Michigan having a large number of charter schools, they fall short on the math and other tests.
