Another thing all of us should have written is a statement of "medical power of attorney". I have one from my aunt, and it gives me authority to determine what medical interventions may take place if she is unable to communicate her wishes. I may not have the exactly correct term for this, but it's important. She is 84, and "sharp as a tack"--told me in specific terms exactly what she does/doesn't want medically, then gave a copy to my Mom just in case....I don't know if this is the same thing as a "living will", but that is for people smarter than I to figure out, I guess.
