Anthrax attacks board? PuhLEEZE. Why not "heart attacks" board instead. WAY more people died yesterday in this country of preventable heart attacks than Anthrax has EVER killed. Lightning strikes board? Bicycle accidents board? Kicked in the head by a horse board? Falling off a ladder at home board? Any one of those probably has a higher mortality rate than anthrax.

First is was the West Nile virus. Overblown and hyped media coverage. Now, anthrax. The media are so hungry and anxious to report on some global-killing super virus, it's probably more likely to become a self-fulfilling prophecy. The terrorist lunatics both domestic and foreign who crave publicity for their actions if not themselves can clearly see how anxious our national media are to turn the full spotlight of every TV station and newspaper on it.

Is anthrax a threat? Yes, but one so miniscule in the grand scheme of things as to make the amount of media coverage paid to the topic border on the ridiculous. Is the real threat to our mail and govenrmental systems, rather than to human life? Perhaps, but I believe those systems and processes are more robust than that.

What the anthrax attacks really do is point out how vulnerable we might be to a real bio threat; something far more virulent and dangerous than anthrax. Unfortunately, it seems our media has once again fallen for overreporting on the hyped-up paper-selling TV-viewing sure thing story rather than focusing the nation on real risks, real weaknesses and real problems. Now, we have a Fool discussion board for it. That will help(?)

We've been attacked by a mail-borne anthrax terrorist. 2-4 unfortunate souls have been killed. 30-40 people are on antibiotics. Our postal workers are facing health risks at work. I pray for them. Still, this in a nation of nearly 300,000,000 people. That larger population faces far, FAR greater physical and biological risks than anthrax. Focus on those, if you must or, better, place your faith in God, as I have, and stop worrying about what you cannot control. More importantly, place your faith in God and demonstrate it by NOT worrying about the time and manner of your death. It will happen at precisely the time and in precisely the way it is intended to happen. Your job is to be prepared every minute of every day to meet your maker.
