anybody read it? any good? i forget the author. looks [like] high-toned carp

Neil Gaiman. I read it last Summer: bought it in hardback because I have loved his work in the past. I thought this book was extraordinary, unforgettable, I loved reading it and was wistful at having finished it. Might be his best work, and that's saying something after the Sandman graphic novels. For my money, it's tons better than Neverwhere, which seemed more like a premise for sequels than an actual novel.

Hoever, you're not mistaken about it being high-toned carp. If you're looking for good solid fantasy action, with heroes slaying orcs and wizards binding demons and a big quest which necessitates sequels, you will be disappointed. It's not that sort of book at all.

Michael Dirda wrote an excellent review of it last Summer in the Washington Post's Book World. I'll see if I can find it.
