One thing I learned in the SHIP seminar is that you're unlikely to owe anything like 20% of a $100,000 hospitalization while on Medicare.

Let's say that after surgery and a 2 week stay you have a $70,000 hospital bill and $30,000 worth of doctor's bills and other charges.

Your piece of the $70,000 hospital bill is capped a $1,404 in 2020. You would owe 20% of the $30,000, or $6,000. So the total would be $7,404 or 7.4% of the $100,000.
