If anyone's interested, on 7/7/00, I performed a foolish four calculation on the top 50 shares on the ASX. I excluded property trusts, but included resource stocks. Numbers 2-5 were, in order, Amcor, Telecom NZ, CSR and Santos. I invested approx $2000 in each of them as a trial run (why not put your money where your mouth is, I say!). Here are the figures: Price Price 7/7/00 1/11/00CSR $4.36 $3.95Amcor $5.81 $5.35Telecom NZ $5.95 $4.30Santos $5.00 $6.14Not looking too good at the moment, but neither is the rest of the market, so I'll sit tight for now.But I do have a question. The Fool says they review the DOW FF at the end of the financial year. Is this appropriate for the ASX50 FF? Should it be at the end of financial year? Should it be more often, or perhaps when the market goes up?
zendad,I was very interested in your post from your figures, tme span, and comparison to the index and when you do the review. I'd like to know about the review or comparison and e-mailed PI on that.I started the dogs system on 3rd November last year so am reviewing it now and may do something from Monday 6th November. Not the foolish four though but the pups of the Dow (the 5 cheapest from the ten) I hadn't come across fool.com then. I also included the property trusts.I also deviated a bit 'cos I sold one on takeover talk and substituted another. I was thinking too we have the benefits of the franked dividend system that I don't think the U.S. has so should be more suited to us??Also a possible problem. Boral was demerged into 2 companies in May so I wonder does the system say to wait till May, 2001?Price Price3/11/99 3/11/00Boral (BOR) $2.36 BLD $1.95 ORG $2.04GPT $2.51 $2.58 (XDiv)WFT $3.010 $3.15CSR $3.42 $4.1225/11/99 PNI bought @$3.47 sold 29/11/99 $4.5630/11/99 STO $4.35 3/11/00 price $6.15(XDiv)From the above it would have been better to have done the variation on the theme with the 4 stock system(Aussie Dogs 4 in the aspect system where you leave out out the cheapest) which would have been BOR. Also the property trusts ?? not sure about them.So so far I've just sold one - PNI a few weeks later.Any comments or suggestions? Bad or fair results?
Narrabeen,Nice to know I'm not rthe only one giving it a go, and that making a table in this format is difficult not just for me.Your results look goodI'm interested in keeping a disciplined approach, but your results indicate that 12 month intervals are adequate and that the time of the year is irrelevent. So I'll probably hang on to my foolish four till 7/01 Best wishes
