Hi Fools,

I am a Canadian trying to set up an American discount brokerage account. On the application form under a “W-9 Certification” heading it says “Unless otherwise indicated, I certify that I am not subject to backup withholding. Check the box if you are subject to backup withholding under the provisions of section 3406 (a)(1)(C).” What is backup withholding? What does it mean to tick or not to tick the box?

Anyone want to share advice about filling out forms W-8 and 1001? I was pretty daunted by them at first but now think I understand them enough to fill them in.

John.
