If you max out your 401k (with an index fund of course), do a Roth IRA once a year and can still save some more money, how do you feel about a Balanced Fund?

I am interested in the PAX Balanced Fund because it offers a decent return but seems more stable (because of the unique mix of stocks and bonds). This interests me because I want to save more but I'd like to feel comfortable calling on the money if I need it. Logic says this fund wouldn't bounce up and down as much. I just don't have the confidence (yet) to buy stocks outright.

This would be in addition to 6 months living expenses in a money market account.

I respect the folks on this board and am interested in all opinions submitted.
