My sister is trying to determine if she should declare bankruptcy, Any help would be appreciated! Her husband left her with a 3 month old 2 years ago. He was pretending to go to school for a teaching degree, bute was leaving the house every day for places unknown! She is a teacher and makes a decent salary. She contacted a credit (not for profit) helper and is making payments. He was also but has since stopped paying. She then renegotiated with the credit and is now paying all the bills that have both their names on them (some 12,000 in debt). She owns her car and is renting my parents house, they live in Indiana now, Dad just lost his job so he really needs her to be paying him rent. She can't make it. She can't afford a divorce attorney and is under way too much stress. What would be the downside of bankruptcy? I am really worried about her (and my parents). She is doing her best but I know that Single mom hood and cutting it that tight, something is going to give. Please advise.
