battle is between NT and CSCO with each using the # 2 in the opposing area of expertise to help out. In this case that's JNPR.

Yes, NT is using JNPR as an ally to round out it's IP routing gaps. But who is the #2 in Optical Networking with which CSCO is allying itself? The candidates must be SCMR/CIEN, but instead, it (CSCO) has made a number of acquisitions (yet to bear fruit.....). Of course NT has made a number of optical acquisitions also (Qtera, XRros, CoreTek, etc.).

Greg Geiling of JP Morgan Securities research comments on this in a recent Comms Equpiment Industry Update of July 6:
"We see the most significant consolidation in the coming year will be in the emerging metro transport and access and optical switching segments, as vendors seekm to build positions in these quickly growing markets".
