Be especially careful in the Southern California areas in the state parks re a friend's brother who works in juvie. And the old joke about watching out for trip wires in No.CA is still true if you go in woods deep enough. KOA's are pretty safe, and the tent camping sites usually are quieter than the RV section. If you do some of the smaller parks/campgrounds, do check in with the ranger/manager. Except for the mosquitos, Colusa (gold country CA) was great, plenty of space between campers, friendly, felt very safe there. General rule: don't park vehicle or pitch tent so either is visible from highway.
