My wife has iris and bearded iris that come up every year, nice and green, beautiful, but no flowers. Why?

Her Siberian Iris were beautiful for the first few years, but nothing now. She doesn't recall if she has divided them every 4 years.

A book she has says they should be divided every 4 years, covered with just a shallow layer of soil. But we have very cold winters here, so she planted them a bit deeper, fearing the rhizomes would freeze over the winter.

Back in Connecticut, we had them and she never did anything -- dividing or anything -- and they came back year after year, no problem.

What are we missing?
