Beer fridges are additional fridges that are generally used to keep beer and other drinks cold on top of a household’s primary fridge for food. One in three Canadian households has a second fridge, many of which are ageing, energy-guzzling models, according to Denise Young, a researcher at the University of Alberta, Canada.

One of three of you have a second fridge? What do you need a fridge for in Canada anyway??

We Canadians have fridges because they prevent food from freezing in 60 below weather. My home has four: kitchen, garage, beer, and wine. All are there to prevent the contents from becoming rock hard frozen. A fridge, therefore, keeps food and drink at a warm 36 degrees F. This is an important necessity in Canadian homes where the wind chill surrounding a chesterfield can be ten times colder than a well digger’s bum.

A little known fact about Canadians is that we buy food and, by the time we get it home, it is frozen solid. When it gets really cold – say, 90 below in summer in all Canadian cities – food freezes the moment we step out of the grocery store. So, when we get home we put the food and drink in a refrigerator so it can thaw.

Lat night, Elly and I went shopping and, as always, all the groceries were frozen by the time we arrived home so we loaded them all in one of our fridges and, this morning, we had liquid milk (first time in a week).

Now you know.
