Please see some of the posts I have written that address this exact question on this board. Personally I would start saving and investing, even if it is very small amounts, as soon as you can. This gives you the power of time on your side.

Of course don't invest any funds you will need in the next 3 to 5 years. The longer you have to let an investment thesis play out, the more likely you will be successful.
