By conventional Wisdom I am much too young to retire, but I have a delightful 5-year-old son who doesn't understand conventional Wisdom and wants more time with his mom. So I'm seriously considering early retirement and a transition to a new career as a Foolish mom. I'm hoping there are some other Fools who have done something similar and are willing to share ideas about managing financing in this kind of situation

This topic comes up regularly on a number of boards here. It was recently discussed in a thread on "The end of work as we know it" on the Workshop Board, and has been discussed here and in the Tax Strategies Board. Reading those threads, you will find pointers to retirement planning information that suggests something in the range of a 6% draw down of assets can be sustained in perpetuity with the funds fully invested in stocks. My personal goal, described in the Workshop Thread, is to start with 3 years of "cash," and annually transfer 3% of the stock portfolio to cash, and live on 1/3 of the cash portfolio during the next year. The living amount will fluctuate with stock returns, but less dramatically than the stock returns because of the 3 year averaging.
