Mining charter will bring SA to its knees

Friday, August 2, 2002 - Johannesburg, Australia

Theminingweb.com reports that gaping holes have begun to appear in the South Africn government's blueprint for black empowerment in the mining industry, with senior market commentators warning that the planned ownership change of the country's mining assets will bring the country to its knees. Economists and fund managers have warned, according to theminingweb.com, that the mass deportation of capital needed to facilitate the shift in ownership in the largely foreign-owned mining sector would lead to a massive devaluation in the rand, spiralling interest rates and a resultant crisis for the country and the Southern African sub-continent.
