Bob Fosse is a really interesting guy, I think. Musicals are almost always happy, joyful affairs. All the musicals in the 40's and 50's were like that, particularly Gene Kelly's stuff. But with the assassinations and Vietnam and Watergate, nobody was really in the mood for joy and optimism. So Fosse invented the cynical musical.

I agree with most of your post and all of your spoiler, except for the statement that Fosse invented the cynical musical. IMO, Rodgers and Hammerstein had him beat by a couple of decades. The Hollywood treatments of Oklahoma! and Carousel are sappy sweet, but if you ever have the chance to see them performed on stage, the way R&H intended them to be staged, you'll be surprised.

Oklahoma! deals with a psychotic cowboy, promiscuity, murder and a bloody land war minutes away from exploding. Carousel's male lead is a violet wife beater who effs up his chances at redemption when given a second chance on earth by slugging his daughter, ait also touched on teenage sexuality and small town bigotry. When these two were first produced, no one had ever seen anything like it before.

Uhura :o)
