We did a bunch of shopping at the local Barnes & Noble on Sunday, and noticed that they had a box with a sign asking for donations to local neighborhood centers. There were tags, each with a kid's name and age, so that you could pick out an age-appropriate book. If you were a "Readers Advantage" member you got an extra % discount. Pretty cheap way to have an excuse to browse the kids' books, pick out a classic (I got Corduroy and A Pocket for Corduroy), and feel good.

Could be that your local bookstores are doing something similar.
