In all my reading about short selling I have not found any detail on the "borrowing" of stocks. It appears that some brokers "lend out" their stocks presumably for a price. I have also read that the brokers can "lend out" stocks owned by others (individuals?).

How does the lending side work? How are they solicited, how are they compensated? What if they want to sell those stocks? etc

Any information would be helpful
