Both Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel began that way, playing second fiddle to Word Perfect and Lotus 1-2-3 respectively.

Those products had the benefit of Windows behind them (including the benefit of MSFT being able to tweak things to lessen the compatibility of competing products). That OS dominance hasn't helped them as much with more recent products, and I don't see how it helps them that much here.
