But i also remember seeing a feature on a US swimmer in the 1992 Barcelona games. His family is of Spanish descent. In 1980, his older brother (i think) was able to compete in Moscow for Spain, due to their "lineage". I have mixed feelings about that sort of thing, but whatever.

My ex-bf was on the Colombian shooting team. He was born in the US, but his dad was from Colombia, and he spent half his life in Colombia (isn't divorce wonderful?). Anyway, he said the reason he was trying for the Colombian team was because there was simply too much competition for slots on the American teams. He said he would have had to go through a whole bunch more trials for the US team than for the Colombian team. Apparently, we have lots more athletes trying for every single spot than any other country. Consequently, they go to another country if they are able, not because they do not have American pride, but because they simply want a better shot at getting in the Olympics.
