But you have to figure these things should have pretty recent technology and someone had to think
about the possibility of data-transfer.

Actually, payload bandwidth is relatively quite small on these satellites vs broadband wireless and the current internet backbone plus data channels are limited. Additionally, it has very very very very very (enough for you?) high cost to operate and maintain. Upgradeability is low and the tech up there, payload-wise, isnt too great either - certainly not like buying and installing a new router. Moving onward the constellation is constantly moving around the globe, not geo-stationary, therefore you need specalialized routing software to move stuff up, along and down appropriately - didnt work well for Iridium wont here either, especially where packet loss is an issue. Finally, tho not all the reasons are out really, these satellites were ill-conceived from the get go and have been outpaced, dramatically, by advances in wireless technology.
