Can anyone articulate a VERY simple strategy - that doesn't include margin or leverage
- that helps me lock in some gains as we approach IV ?

The simplest strategy is to sell the number of shares required for the expenses coming up.

Or you could buy a put option just barely out of the money for the time between now and when you need the money. That is a bit more risky, but not much.

How would writing a call help you? Do you anticipate that the premium would cover the loss if the stock went down?
