I've never had an IRA and I'm planning to open a Roth this week. Is it too late to contribute to this account for the year 2000, or must I have opened a Roth IRA in 2000 to do this?

Greetings, Donaldtran9, and welcome. You asked:

I've never had an IRA and I'm planning to open a Roth this week. Is it too late to contribute to this account for the year 2000, or must I have opened a Roth IRA in 2000 to do this?

No, it's not too late at all. You have until April 16, 2001, to open and contribute to your IRA for tax-year 2000.

Regards..Pixy

Just make sure your Roth IRA custodian knows what tax year you're designating your contributions for, and will agree to report it to the IRS that way.
