LOS ANGELES, Sept 29 (Reuters) - CBS dominated the first week of the new U.S. television season, ranking as the most watched network overall and winning target audiences with help from its "CSI" crime drama franchise, according to data issued on Wednesday.

The Viacom Inc.-owned network averaged 13.6 million total viewers in prime time for the week ended Sept. 26, topping second-place NBC, a unit of General Electric Co. , at 10.6 million, Nielsen Media Research reported.

...For CBS, it marked the best all-round September premiere week since 1991, and a week of gains in key Wednesday and Thursday night ratings battlegrounds once dominated by NBC.

...CBS had six of the 10 most watched shows overall, including the season premiere of "CSI: Miami" at No. 2 and the No. 5 series debut of "CSI: NY," which bested the 15th-season launch of rival NBC show "Law & Order" in their first matchup....The latest edition of CBS's "Survivor" was the most watched "reality" show of the week at No. 6

...CBS also was the only one of the Big Four commercial broadcasters to post year-to-year gains for the week among both viewers 18-49 and those aged 25-54.
