I am getting pretty disgusted with lifetimes of my CD-ROM and DVD ROM drives on my computer. This computer has used up 3 now in 6 years, and I do not even use them very much. The failure mode is always the same: the drawer will not open, even if I put a paper clip in the little hole. If I press the eject button, the LED goes on and it sounds like it works, but it does not. If I ask the computer to eject it, same non-result.

I took the first one apart and the belt had gotten to where it would not work anymore, but I could not get a new one to replace it. I took it to a repair shop and they said they would charge me more to open it up and estimate it than the $20 or so to sell me a new one. So I took a new one. This happened a second time. The third time I got a DVD drive so I could view videos on my monitor, but now that has quit.

Is this the expected lifetime of these things. The current one is a Sony. If they all fail the same way, does anyone know a source of drive belts for the door opening mechanism?
