> CATALYTICA ENERGY SYSTEMS RECEIVES AWARD FROM THE
> CALIFORNIA ENERGY COMMISSION FOR EXPANDED APPLICATION OF XONON
>
> MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (September 25, 2001) Catalytica Energy Systems,
> Inc. (Nasdaq: CESI) announced today that the California Energy Commission
> (CEC) has released a Notification of Proposed Award of $3 million to
> Catalytica Energy Systems to help fund application of the Company's Xonon*
> Cool Combustion system to a multi-combustor gas turbine engine.
> Catalytica Energy Systems was one of three companies to receive the top
> score out of 47 proposals received by the Environmentally Preferred
> Advanced Generation Program sponsored by the CEC's Public Interest Energy
> Research (PIER) Program.
> This award will help fund a new program, which the Company expects to
> launch in the fourth quarter this year, focusing on the design and
> integration of Xonon into a small, under 15 megawatt (MW), multiple
> combustor "multi-can" gas turbine. Catalytica Energy Systems expects to
> partner with a gas turbine manufacturer who has demonstrated an interest
> in commercializing Xonon on one of its multi-can turbine models to
> participate in this effort. Successful completion of the development work
> for this program will culminate in an engine test under full-scale
> operating conditions, followed by commercialization of the Xonon-equipped
> multi-combustor gas turbine.
> "This award will enable us to further pursue and accelerate our
> application of Xonon to a broader range of gas turbine sizes and
> configurations," stated Craig Kitchen, president and CEO of Catalytica
> Energy Systems. "A great number of gas turbine models in the market
> today, from the smallest to the largest, employ a multi-can combustor
> configuration. Developing Xonon for small gas turbines with multiple
> combustors is the next logical step in our strategy to expand the
> addressable market for our product."
> Kitchen continued, "The California Energy Commission has been a long-time
> supporter of our Xonon technology. In fact, prior funding from its PIER
> Program made possible the initiation of our field demonstration of Xonon
> at Silicon Valley Power, which has successfully demonstrated ultra-low
> emissions of NOx while operating on a 1.4 MW gas turbine for over 8,000
> hours, supplying clean power to the electric utility grid. We are pleased
> that the CEC continues to value the potential of our technology and are
> gratified to have received this latest award."
> The PIER Program was created by the CEC in 1997 to conduct public interest
> energy research that seeks to improve the quality of life for California
> citizens by providing environmentally sound, safe, reliable and affordable
> energy services and products. For more information regarding the PIER
> Program and these awards, please visit the CEC's website at
> www.energy.ca.gov.
> Catalytica Energy Systems designs and develops advanced products for
> more effective energy production. Its proprietary technologies include
> the use of catalysts to create solutions to ease the environmental impact
> of power generation. The Company's first product, Xonon Cool Combustion,
> is a breakthrough combustion technology that achieves ultra-low emissions
> levels for gas turbine power production. Xonon prevents the formation of
> pollution, particularly nitrogen oxides (NOx), a primary contributor to
> smog, through a proprietary catalytic combustion process. Additional
> technology development efforts include work on fuel processing for fuel
> cells, as well as adaptation of Xonon technology to micro-turbines, hybrid
> gas turbine fuel cells, and diesel applications. Find Catalytica Energy
