Sometime within the next 6 months we anticipate traveling to China to adopt our daughter. We will be going a week ahead of our adoption group so that we can do some additional site-seeing. While we subscribe to a China adoption group that has a great deal of information, we want to get as many different perspectives as possible. So please, if you would, share any insights, thoughts, tips you have on travel to and in China. (We do not know where we will be going other than that our final stop in China will be the U.S. Consulate at Guangzhou.)

--Things to see, especially things not on the standard tourist route.
--Things to buy that are representative of an area. How you got those things home.
--Things you should have taken with you. Things you could have left at home.
--What shots you got.
--What surprised you the most (both positively and negatively).
--What words/phrases one should learn. General tips on communication.
--Security, safety, health precautions
--Customs and traditions one should be aware of

We will be traveling with my parents for that first week. Then we will meet up with the rest of our adoption group for a some touring and paper work over a 10-12 day period.

Thanks for the input.
