If the OP and spouse are disciplined enough to live off their savings, fine. Most people are not.

another factor, yes.

i've not liked annuities for myself because of fees and 'safety' (some risk the company will go away, no?) and i don't have much savings. plus i'm very old.

but two have tempted me
BRK -- low fees (and rates), seems they'd be safe
Charitables -- high rates (somehow), and should be safe.
