This week’s The Economist has a worthwhile article on coal. They claim that “...its use is declining in the US, but is increasing elsewhere” (paraphrasing). Anecdotally, I know that train shipments of the stuff to the west coast have increased in recent years, with all the usual NIMYBY protestors being countered by those who’d like some of the thousands of jobs coal terminals would create. Of possible interest to investors (equity-side or debt-side) is how to play the trends.
