Collectibles are poor assets to store value if they need to be available in hard times. They can be quite good as an investment if you are very confident that you can pick if and when to liquidate.

I collect antique furniture crafted from wood of extinct or very rare trees beautifully emblematic of particular styles such as Viennese Secessionist, Barcelona Modernismo, or California Craftsmen. They all just keep going up in value.... but I doubt even my heirs will part with them.
